With a simple prompt, it is now possible to generate a beautifully styled living room, place a sofa into a virtual environment or create an entirely new interior concept in seconds. For the furniture industry, this can be incredibly exciting.

But there is another side to the AI revolution that is becoming increasingly important: ”the environmental cost of generating all of that content.”

When you type a prompt into an AI image generator, the image doesn’t simply appear out of nowhere. Behind that image are powerful computers, GPUs and data centres processing huge amounts of information. These systems require electricity and, importantly, cooling.

According to the International Energy Agency, data centres accounted for around ”1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024”, and global data-centre electricity consumption is projected to more than double by 2030. AI is one of the major drivers behind that growth. Cooling these facilities can also involve water.

Research into AI’s water footprint has highlighted that both the electricity required by AI and the cooling of data centres can contribute to water consumption. The exact amount varies enormously depending on the technology and where the computing takes place, so there isn’t one universal “glass of water per AI image” figure.

That distinction is important.

AI isn’t inherently bad. But AI isn’t environmentally free either. So what does this mean for furniture imagery?
For a furniture manufacturer, AI-generated imagery can be tempting. You can ask AI to create a room around a sofa, change the colour of a cabinet or produce a completely new interior concept.

But there is another technology that has been doing this for years: 3D CGI.

At Chilli Pepper Designs, we create the furniture first as an accurate 3D model. We then build the environment around it, applying the correct materials, finishes, colours, dimensions and details. This means the furniture remains under our control. A walnut finish can be changed to oak. A marble top can be replaced.Handles can be redesigned. A sofa can be placed into multiple environments.

A whole collection can be photographed in different styles without physically transporting the furniture from location to location. And because the product is built as a 3D model, the same asset can continue to be used throughout its marketing life.

CGI gives you control, not just an image

This is one of the biggest differences between AI-generated imagery and traditional CGI. With AI, you are essentially asking a system to interpret what your furniture should look like. With CGI, ”we tell the computer exactly what the furniture looks like.” That matters enormously when you’re selling furniture.

– The proportions need to be right.
– The legs need to be in the right position.
– The grain needs to run in the correct direction.
– The handles need to match the actual product.
– The fabric needs to look like the fabric you’re selling.
– And the final image needs to represent something that a customer can actually purchase.

For furniture manufacturers and retailers, accuracy isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s part of the product.

CGI can also reduce the need for physical photography. There is another environmental consideration that is often overlooked.

Traditional furniture photography can involve transporting products, building sets, sourcing props, hiring studios, travelling to locations and repeatedly photographing the same product whenever a finish or colour changes. CGI can dramatically reduce the need for this.

Once a product has been digitally modelled, we can create multiple environments and variations without physically moving the furniture.
– One sofa can become five different lifestyle images.
– One dining table can be shown in several interiors.
– One bedroom range can be visualised in different finishes.
– The environment can change without rebuilding an entire physical set.

Create once. Re-use many times.

For a furniture business producing large collections, this can make both commercial and environmental sense.

But we don’t think CGI should be an excuse to ignore sustainability either

At Chilli Pepper Designs, we don’t want to simply point the finger at AI.

CGI also requires computing power. Rendering is not impact-free, and we believe every digital business should be thinking about how its technology is being powered and cooled.

That’s why we work with rendering partners who are actively looking at ways to make their infrastructure more responsible. Some of our render-farm partners use systems designed to recover and reuse heat and hot water generated by their computing infrastructure, including initiatives that help provide useful heat to households and communities that need it.

The idea is simple: if computers generate heat, why let that heat go to waste?

Instead, technology can become part of a circular system where energy that would otherwise be lost can be put to practical use. For us, that is the direction the industry should be moving towards.

Not simply asking:
”Can we generate this image?”

But:

“Can we generate this image efficiently, responsibly and with as little waste as possible?”

AI and CGI don’t have to be enemies. We don’t believe the future is about choosing one technology and completely rejecting another. AI can be incredibly useful.

It can help with inspiration, concepts, moodboards, brainstorming and speeding up certain parts of the creative process. But when the objective is to create ‘accurate, commercially usable furniture imagery’, CGI has some significant advantages.

– It gives manufacturers control over their products.
– It allows colours, materials and finishes to be changed accurately.
– It allows the same 3D model to be reused across multiple marketing campaigns.
– And it can reduce the need for physical sets, samples and transportation.

The smartest approach may therefore be ‘using the right technology for the right job.’

A more considered future for furniture imagery. The furniture industry is becoming increasingly digital.

Customers expect beautiful imagery. Retailers need more content. Manufacturers need to showcase larger collections in more finishes and styles. At the same time, businesses are becoming more conscious of their environmental responsibilities.

That means we need to look beyond simply asking what technology is fastest. We need to ask what is ‘accurate, reusable, efficient and responsible.’
